i am on a quest for old/vintage cardigans, sweaters and jumpers with cool patterns.

this one was adopted from my husband years ago and is something quite special,

but since i love it so much, i do want variations, so as to not wear this one out..

worn with rodarte (for target) slip dress

cool weather and holidays fast approaching, i think i have made the seamless wardrobe transition, but there is still no telling, as the cool months always extend longer than i expect and i always end up wanting the heat far before i should or far before we get it..

recently solidified as my favorite model of all time. i like that she's so lithe (yes, even now with all the size controversy). her tattoos, i envy and will try not to copy. she's absolutely beautiful and here she appears to exude a realness, that although i do not know the woman, seems so real. and simple. i have already copied her hair style, following my venture into copying the original blond agyness-deyn-do. i am excited to watch her as the years go by.

so...

in preparation of my Halloween costume

because i have been thinking about doing this for some time

because i have solidified the fact that I will never dye my hair again

because of the aforementioned, i was still in need of some change...

i BLEACHED my brows!!

crazy hu? i actually kind of love it! i think i am going to take in down one more shade tonight, as i missed a few roots on the left brow and just because i want them a tad lighter. over the years and through all the damage of my hair, i have decided (about a year ago) that i will NEVER bleach, dye, perm (whatever!) again. i rarely use a blow dryer or any other heat styling tools and plan to keep it that way..so....since i have been feeling the itch for change that gets me a couple times of year, i decided to just go all out for my costume (and more...) and just get crazy the bleach!

As per the suggestion of Style.com, I looked to the SS2011 runways

for costume inspiration this Halloween...

Marc Jacobs' Disco ~~Queen~~ Bitch it is!

(I like that Disco Bitch sounds similar to the name of my husband's turtle:

'Disco Biscuit')

Although the dress I will don is a small floral print it still has the one-shoulder design

that I think epitomizes a Studio 54 aesthetic.

I am going to try really hard to rid my face of my brows..

I considered bleaching them (I have been considering it for sometime, any how..)

but I think I will just go with powders and concealers instead.

Dark eyes with a shimmer and a berry lips shall complete the face.

My fine hair will be made as big and frizzy as possible..

AND, I have a killer source to get some really great silk florals for my hair.

Though not a part of the MJ runway looks,

my Jeffrey Campbell Clogs will complete the look..

in true Disco form, of course!

We went out after the Designer of the Year Fashion Show Competition,

(my first year not walking in it!!)

to pop bottles of bubbly and celebrate the fact that

Rebecca Turley, founder and designer of

Nostalgic Boutique WON!!
This happened a few weeks ago, so I am a little slow in getting this posted..
(it's super exciting, none-the-less)

She is a great friend of mine and an amazing designer..
Now that I do not model anymore, for the most part,
I have been appointed Rebecca's assistant! I've never been one to take a 2nd seat,
but I will gladly take 2nd seat to this amazing woman and assist her in anything she needs!
I am especially excited to begin tackling her nation-wide sales in the coming year.

Encore 24 Launch @ Urban Seven - Scottsdale

Ah.. the fashion spectacle that is Scottsdale Arizona.

A city that, so badly, wants to be (like) Beverly Hills.

A place where frivolousness runs as rampant as sunscreen at the

Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas... (see: ray of death)

A place with no shortage of silicon or douche, for lack of better words..

But, however silly I find this place, Scottsdale, it is an honor to live here in Arizona

and it was a great honor to be a part of the launch party for new production company

(which I have been working with and hope to work with more in the future), Encore 24

The festivities took place at new fashion-y "hot spot" in Old Town Scottsdale, Urban Seven.

Check out the website to see what they offer and what they have coming up in the next few months,

as Phoenix and Scottsdale Fashion Weeks are in the next two months!!

My date was my cowboy of a husband and funny enough he was somewhat a hit that night..

Living in Arizona you would think that by wearing a cowboy hat you would not garner one strange look or double take, but i can tell you, from much experience, that is just not the case.

Wear a cowboy hat in almost any urban or suburban area pf the Phoenix matropolitan area, as you are looked at as though you have spilt an entire pot of green chile on yourself or as if you just landed your spaceship.. it is a phenomenon that I can not explain..

I wore a REALLY old dress of mine (like high school old!) with docs,

but no boots can really compare to my cowboy's alligators..

Urban Seven pours a mean variety of martinis, but I stuck with the Primavera all night..

loooove it..

All-in-all the night was great..

..and the people watching was exquisite

Good times were had by all and perhaps even a few too many cocktails..

The Event took place at Urban 7 a new(er) Restaurant, Bar, Venue or sorts

in Old Town Scottsdale..

Fashion's Night Out - The Scottsdale Version

...and a sad version, indeed

Since it's inception just last year, FNOs have decidedly popped up in

every city from Lexington, KY to Beachwood, Ohio..

and sure enough, Scottsdale and Phoenix area malls hosted our own pathetic version..

not to "knock" the fashion scene here,

since i do work in it, but it was nothing to write Lagerfeld about..

a few girlfriends and i decided to make a night out of it.

we took to Scottsdale Fashion Square mall. for those of you not familiar with our little oasis here,

Scottsdale Fashion Square is probably the best mall we have in town.

a most recent addition allows Scottsdale to now boast a Barney's.

it took long enough..

(we are still waiting on our Bloomingdales's.. it's not like i care though)

we started with happy hour drinks at gorgeously posh Modern Steak

i should've taken more photos, only had my iPhone,
but all of the happy hour food was $2!!
there was nice sized salads with champagne vinaigrette
and over-sutffed sliders, crispy french fries.. just YUM

following many glasses of bubbles, savory nosh and quick moving conversations

where not once sentence was completed,

we had 40 minutes left before the mall closed..

we made a dash to Barney's with no other intention than

playing intoxicated dress up..

it was so quiet.. i think we were the only customers in complete sight! score!

i sprinted for the Wang... but died

for a Helmut Lang leather and shearling jacket in the chaotic yet empty path..
but eventually made it to the rack-o6'-Wang..

this f/w2010 alexander wang was beautiful in person,

but there was some strange tailoring issues on the back, like it was missing a stitch or two..

love, either way

i also spotted beautiful 3.1 Phillip Lim..

..that i had a bit of fun with.. it was a size too big,

but i love the sequince with my Doc's!!

this next 3.1 P.L.dress was my favorite of the night.
i literally contemplated putting it on my credit card, but debated
that i am not yet cool enough to have a place to wear it..
where it would be perfectly suitable..

so, i fawned over it's beauty for about 20 minutes, before taking it off..

i loved how short it was in the side/back, but still looked very classy and beautiful..

although Scottsdale's version of FNO was nothing special,

my girls and i made it special. we laughed the night away and apologized profusely to the

Barney's staff for our antics.. but they were too busy laughing with at us..

balancing evolution

good morning! so, in my quest to redefine fickleface here,

i have decided to allow food and fashion share the same post..

woke up this morning, with my body asking for food immediately.

i don't normally chow in the early morning (6:30) but i kind of needed something.

so since actual cooking was not at all going to be a part of my morning,

i blended instead..

plain kefir, flax seed, nutritional yeast, black grapes

didn't get a snap of the final product, but the black grapes and flax made for a wonderful dotted purple smoothie,

which was just enough to fill my unusual morning void..

my morning need for nutrition continued and i responded with some healthy almond granola as soon as i walked into the office.

dry granola. eaten with my fingers. i love it.

last night i followed through with something i had been planning to do for a week or so..

i cut the sleeves off this trench coat.

the coat is flimsy cotton and was picked up in a cheap boutique in las vegas.

i love the shape of it, but rarely ever wear it.

i think that is due to our weather.. (i will not go into it.. we all know it's hot here)

i find that if i am in need of wearing a coat or jacket, that it needs to be a bit thicker.

this coat was, from the get-go, completely useless to me. not warm, nor practical.

i just loved it. and if i remember correctly it was on sale for less than $20..

so...since i am really into vests i thought that by eliminating the sleeves, it could become increasingly useful,

but, not necessarily any more practical for anything other than sweet styling options!!

i am streamlining and learning to dress only within the

personification which i am trying to project.

with all of the changes looming on the horizon,

it seems about time to solidify who i am and accept it fully..

this will include embracing my roots, learning and understanding more about where i live

and looking to family as a great source of inspiration.

i feel this look is truly a uniform for me..

a hard edge with a whisper of femininity.

black boots already dominate my shoes collection,

so this will become a basis for most of my personal styling..

denim, leather or bare for my stems and over-sized soft knits for the rest..

it has taken time for me to find this comfort zone but

i am already loving the idea of working with less in my closet..

not to say i will be getting rid of much, instead just moving it to my other, hidden closet..

my birthday is tomorrow, but my husband and i celebrated on sunday. he took me shopping, shooting and to lunch at old towne scottsdale staple, cowboy ciao. i had a mushroom pan fry with about 11 or 12 different types of mushrooms which was beyond craveable. it was beautifully coated in an ancho cream sauce and was accompanied by two pieces of double-cooked polenta. needless-to-say it was a vegetarian "meaty" dream.

my silly husband had a burger..

i had not known that this place has been in scottsdale for about 14 years. in my opinion, that makes it quite the scottsdale staple since i have seen many nice restaurants quickly come and go for the past 8 years..

but i can see why it has lasted..

happy birthday to me and all the crazy leos out there!!

happy 234th birthday USA!!

we quietly celebrated on a bright sunny day

in which we were blessed with only about 100° weather..

so grilling was a nice treat for those who so indulged..

i stuck to stuffed grape leaves, tabouli, coleslaw

and later frozen tart yogurt with rainbow sprinkles!

hardly half american, i know, but it is what i craved.

these are 3 disintegrating stone coyotes that i found quite charming

cut my own bangs earlier in the week..

i am getting so exciting about the growth progression of my hair.

my husband and i escaped from our typical weekend routine of house work and groceries

to employ the enjoyment of some relaxing at a local renovated vintage hotel.

our room was beautiful..

..as was the entire property

the hotel valley ho, originally built in 1956, was a staple amongst celebrities visiting the

modest valley of yesteryear. much has changed, but the spirit of mid-fifties modern

meets a tropical serenity of a south pacific-style back drop, still remains..

getting prepared for dinner..

trader vic's sits on the corner of the property and blends a

culinary sophistication with visual and sensual calmness..

.. it was not too "chain-y" ..

.. and the food and drinks were exquisite

the weekend started quickly and semi-normal..

yet it somehow found a way to slowly unwind into

a cataclysm of unexpected events..

a cheesy smile shows that

living in AZ really is truely like living in the wild wild west..

at least most of us like to think so.. we go shooting and

romping in the desert,

there are horses everywhere to ride, trails to explore..

we boast an abundance of scorpions, tarantulas, coyotes (2 types), hawks,

javalinas (a desert hog), quail, and

many other very western-desert-type animals..

we can even carry/conceal our weapons pretty much where ever we want

and our sheriff even makes in-mates wear stripes

and work in chain gangs..need-less-to-say it is pretty cool here.

recently friends and i have become quite interested in

using ammo to make jewelry, a little tires, i know,

but this idea can never real go out of style here.

one friend did in fact fashion me a necklace made from a plug

for a p.a. and a .40 cal bullet shell.. images of it, to come,

but you can see it at a distance HERE

i keep seeing more and more usage of grounded ammo

and am trying to commission my friend to make more and more

interesting pieces that perhaps we can sell..

i am highly inspired by the above pieces form smoke&daggers

AND speaking of selling, i haven't yet shred my career change and

BIG news for my husband and i, so without further adieu..

i am so very pleased to announce that my husband

and i are in the process of buying the gallery he currently works for.

not only is it an art gallery, but we also offer large scale printing,

post-production image enhancement, photography, archival framing

and much more...

we couldn't be more thrilled and as more exciting news of the

project becomes available and as we plan more into

strange dreams lately.. this is following a major dream drought.
i know they say that you dream every night, but just may not remember it..
i go through phases: less/more dreaming than normal
but lately, they are just weird, quick snippets of a dream
that feel so real..
last nights snippet (again, very real) consisted of a client of mine
telling me he is getting a divorce..
his wife is also a client of mine and so i saw her today and when i did,
i remembered the dream and my heart sank!
at first i thought, oh shit! she is going through a divorce..
but then, thankfully i remembered..

it was all just a dream!

she would over-stuff pastel baskets with candies and plush animals,

hide colored hard-boiled eggs all over the yard for us children to seek out.

and she even resisted cooking rabbit one year, for fear we would be scarred..

ahh, but i am vegetarian/pescatarian now..

i will see her off on easter morning, but before her departure we will color eggs,

like the old days and keep them for egg salads and what-not..

my husband was gracious enough to take me out to the desert (like five minutes from the house)

for a little photo shoot. we did this in about 20 minutes.

the desert floor is so green and full of wild flowers and grasses,

thanks to all of the rain we have had.. so it was perfect to photograph.

it is not the typical dry, dead-looking desert that we are so used to.

the dress is the come slither dress by black crane, which i picked up from nastygal.

it is a digital snake print that i thought was prefect for the desert!

this weekend holds all sorts of fun plans, including a possible desert photo shoot, hiking pinnacle peak in north scottsdale, hanging with friends and who knows what else!!

finally some good photos of my rodarte for target dress.. i do love this frock but i am a klutz and a tomboy so i have to be extra careful when wearing it.

my hair has been driving me crazy lately. i am trying to grow it out but it is so fine and should i say: thin.

so i am not certain how the whole plan will pan out, as i am [this close] to shaving my head!

it is warming up quickly here. 80-degrees-F today!! so my office door is shut and the a/c is on. i have love/hate relations with our weather here. i grew up in colorado, enjoying 4 very fickle seasons, with snow in the winter, warm spring and summers and falling leaves in the autumn, very much unlike it is here in arizona. it was beautiful in colorado and i enjoyed my time there, but i was never a fan of tackling the cold, wet snowy weather for 3-4 months straight.. so, since i was born in the desert and it had always been calling me back, i came back. 8 years ago this summer, to be exact. i just traded the mojave desert for the sonoran. and i couldn't be happier. i couldn't imagine how much clothing i would have if i needed to dress for the 4 seasons! and i honestly think my warmest coat is my leather motorcycle jacket!

either way, i have been scouring my tanks lately and pondering what my summer wardrobe will consist of, which wont be much, considering our blistering heat. and since i wont ever be required to wear "office attire" starting in about 3 months (i will discuss this in an upcoming post), i will really get to do the daily dressing i have always desired to do.. which is: exactly what i, alyssa, wants!!

my tattoos will no longer have to hide under a random cardigan and if i want to be a little extra sexy one day, i can! i will be so nice to have my husband as my boss (and vice versa)...

as scary as that sounds!! ha!

i have been known to wear a lot of black and typically

an every-day skinny black pant of some nature. but reviewing my taste of the past,

you'd see that i was quite the hippie from ages 13 to 23.. so, for ten years

i really embraced loose fitting jeans, peasant tops, flat sandals, long skirts,

messy hair and such.. after all the recent years of black

(which i interpret as me finding my "style") i am sort of finding a way to

blend the current alyssa with the alyssa of the past. and it is working!

updated clogs and loose-fitting dresses feel so hippie now to me

this dress was an amazing 3 dollar find at a really cute local thrift shop,

where all the income goes to an animal shelter.

(wow, i am really turning back the clock,

saving animals and all but, that's a

story for another time.. probably a food post!)

time to go back to THIS too!! ;)

p.s. i am not loving some of these changes in blogger!!

i 'walked' for stacie a couple years back and then happened to win this

dress in an on-line contest, recently! how lucky am i?

this dress suits my daily style so well, considering the black,

the lace and the fact that it is draped and loose! i love wearing it.

it looks great paired with OTK boots or colored huaraches and

it is so comfortable, as you can see.. it flows with every move you make!

it has been really, unusually cold here in phoenix, az, following all the rain

we have been getting recently, so i paired the dress

with my favorite thick black tights to help keep me warm.

(it is so strange that i need to keep warm.. i am not used to that!)

these clogs, which i just received yesterday, are my dream!

i am an ex-hippie, vegetarian.

i am now a pescatarian and still try and do my best to help the earth by

recycling and reusing, conserving..

it is tough but i have a long-term goal and plan..

these clogs bring me back to a time when i was completely carefree

and in love with only the earth (and wierd patchouli smells)..

but the height helps give

me the updated modern mood,

today i was saddened to hear the news of mc queen's passing, but i must say that the over-abundance of drug related death and suicide makes me wonder: is the world running low on courage? i can't find words really.. death is completely inescapable, but forced death just makes you think: how sad is sad? what place do you go to in such times of great sadness? how low is too low? are these thoughts and lack of courage truely out of selfishness or is the monster bigger than that? i guess we will never know, until we meet our maker..but, then what?

on a more positive note, i am happy to share that this valentine's day will be spent with friends and my loving husband at a native american hoop dance contest at the heard museum in downtown phoenix. i couldn't be more thrilled. being of some shawnee decent (and more specifically of tecumseh's lineage) i have been fascinated and enthralled with all things native american. but sadly i haven't spent as much time as i would like exploring the various cultures of the american indians. so this weekend shall serve as aesthetic eye candy as well as an educational tribute to my ancestors. some friends that are joining us are also of native american lineage and one in particular has frequent dreams consisting of native dances with abundance of feathers/colors/animals. i find this intriguing, as i have never had such an amazing sounding dream, not to mention any revolving around possible ancestors of mine. i will hopefully take many photos to share with you.. ah ha! that means i must clean out my camera and get some batteries...... stay tuned..

i'd like to think of myself as a smart woman. i didn't finish a proper education past high school, but my parents raised me well and i am currently a normal, functioning (and paid) member of society. i can also form complete sentences, oral and written; drive a manual transmission vehicle; change the oil in a motorcycle; read a map; make a roux (a white sauce used to thicken a final sauce) as well as many other things that i am quite certain many people my age and older are unable to do, whether by disability or choice, it doesn't matter, my point is that i am intelligent and i know it. this is not a note written to parade what i am capable of, yet a study to help me understand why it is so easy for me to feel inferior to others in my life. or why i let their benighted word or action become my bane. perhaps it is the words released from the lips of a loved one intended to poke fun or unveil a weakness that take such tolls on my already heavy heart. perhaps it is the envying looks i receive from random passersby when i happen to be wearing a kimono to a chain restaurant, a look which i translate into complete disdain for my every being. whichever, it is not a hurt caused from an outside assailant, but rather a dagger i deeply drive into my own side. i admit, i am an easy target. i think i always have been. i remember not understanding what the big deal was that i am so sensitive, but what i did realize was that the world is not going to change, instead, i have to. i haven't. i am not so sure i will either. here's where it comes around full circle. i am uncertain of the exact moment where i go into some form of survival mode, relentlessly defending myself and my actions, but this is the tragic gray area of which i let myself feel inferior to some "smarter" human, when that is more than likely not the case.

i am having a tough time locating my "holiday spirit".. and it shows, right?
this is the last day at the office for 4 days, but i am in such need of a real vacation.
like a month? why oh why can't that happen?
i was pondering travel to one of my home states, but decided that the hubby and his fam could use all the love and support i might be able to muster up.. but that is becoming the problem. if i don't buck up and find some peace for the holiday inside my soul than i will become much more of a burden than any good to a family at the end of a grieving year.
so why can't i allow myself to relax? i could use any suggestions at this point as there is less than 48 hours until the big day..ugh!! please any words of hope and love..

i must take this time to report/place my useless opinion on the rodarte for target collaborative collection. since the very first launch of these inexpensive collabs, i have tried very hard to get to my local/the closest target in an attempt to be the first to walk away with something half designer related. i know it is cheap fabric and typically ill fitting, but i love the idea and feel that my small collection of these pieces will have some sort of nostalgic feeling for me in the future since i am not a fashionista/blogger getting free things sent to me nor have i made any sort of substantial amount that would allow for frequent perusing of designer showrooms or even barney's for that matter. i tend to stick to the usual: f21, UO, target and thrift..

anyway, back to the main purpose of this post.. i haven't really read what other people have to say regarding this collection but per the usual target collabs, droopy anticipation of bad fit and cheap fabric riddled any possible heart for the launch. and i thought it was coming out 12/25, so you could understand my surprise and subsequent freaking out while i was at work yesterday counting down the minutes until i was able to jet over to the store. . i had called ahead to have a few things held for me, as i keep hearing how fast it was going, but they surprisingly had a great selection remaining. i feel that i lucked out with my purchase of the pink slip dress. more of a nude if you ask me. but my vote is: the BEST collab yet!! fit is really.. WOW and the fabric chosen may be "cheap" but the options were cleverly chosen. my only complaint is the tulle on my pink slip dress was already with a hole. but i found why this was the case as i was trying on the black slip dress.. if not careful the tulle gets stuck underneath the slip and in the zipper on the side. so yes, i put a hole in the black one that i didn't buy, but i DID buy the pink one with a hole in the same exact location. you couldn't see it if i told you and even so.. add a few more for a roughed up look.. we'll see. all the hosiery was in fact sold out and that broke my heart.. but to my surprise, i struck gold when i found that someone had put 3 pairs on hold at the changing room. i tapped my nails on the counter not-so-patiently waiting for said customer to return and swoop up the beautifully perforated knee highs, but after 15 minutes when no one had returned, i tucked the mustard / nude pair under my slip dress and zig-zaged my way to a register so as to not be tackled by the hosiery hoarder.

now, why didn't i like the leopard dress? well, i actually LOVED this dress. the fabric was thick and not nearly as worrisome as the tulle; the fit was to-die-for. however, i felt very warm in the body-con dress and if i am just standing in target in a dress and feel hot, it is not going to be practical. ever. not in arizona. plus, i keep hearing a rumbling that the body-con train, which i never happened to board, is on it's way out of town.. and how!! i am not one to really follow trend, but since it was such a huge trend, i think it would be a bad idea to wear it so late in the game.

it was actually fairly chilly today in phoenix and we even expect rain this week! december rains. i have awaiting their arrival for some time. our august/september monsoons were extinguished by god only knows what and we have since been fairing as best as we can in the balmy warm autumn that's been given. weekend business as usual today. straightening of the new garage and trip to the grocers, and an extra strong dose of french pressed coffee to keep us moving. moving is easy in the soft, comfy knits and the boots have become a cool weather, weekend staple.

my new home has been my focus lately and i am just happily enjoying the transition. it's peaceful and new without being a different neighborhood. it is comfortable. and i am happy! i am attending an event tomorrow and i hope to have photos to share. then, a fashion show, wednesday for an FIDM holiday party, so i should most definitely have photos from that.

i hope every one is have a nice holiday and if in the northern hemi, i hope you are enjoying the cool. the opposite for those of you in the warmth of the south. and with 2010 on the brink i hope we all have good spirit and hopeful feelings for the time to come..

ran across abbey's (tobaccoandleather) illustrations for school. i love them and find them (in a good way) inspired by the latest alexander mcQueen collection and ink blots. then today my friend emailed me this website with amazing wall paper, it all came full circle for me. i tend to steer clear of too much color, but i think this is how it can be done..these mesmerizing folded colors layered on each other is so natural yet it has a very modern and structured feel here in these images.

so this got me thinking about personal inspiration and by contrast, personal expression. i have been inspired by color (rainbows, sun light, photography etc..) for my entire life. it seems that whenever my life takes a huge change i see a rainbow in some form or another. this was recently confirmed for the event of moving into my new home in north phoenix, when i spotted a real rainbow within the rain clouds of a wussy storm last week. i find that in honestly expressing me, alyssa that moody colors is the best fit. i can't wear much color, or choose not to, but i am obsessed with it. i worked in the paint department of a home improvement store (no, not lowes or the depot) and i was surrounded in color. i wore a black apron and every time i had a spot of paint on my can opener, i wiped it on the apron. after a year of working there, i, myself, looked like a rainbow.. i understand that the world would not work or even exist if it weren't for color and so i stand by it relentlessly, even while swathed in head-to-toe black. i could consider myself more of an angry or aggressive person.. as opposed to say, a happy one, but color will always lift my spirits and find a way into my ever-dying soul.. so, whether it be the oozing cherry red in a homemade pie or the rich brown of my favorite vintage bag, i believe that color is one of the most necessary elements in our world.

so, my new food-making adventure lately has been perfecting this no-cook granola bar recipe. i go through these phases where i cook the same thing over and over, until i become precise and efficient, so as to make it the best i possibly can. i have done this with various healthful casseroles, smoothies, sauces/pestos and more. i stumbled upon this no-cook method for healthy granola bars. there is only 2/3 c. brown sugar for the whole batch which ends up to be between 16 and 24 bars. i don't think that that is too bad, but you can try omitting half or so if you want them to be even healthier.

2 cups oats
3/4 cup flax seed flour
3/4 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup nuts, crushed/chopped (i used almonds, this time)
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
4 Tbsp butter - i use smart balance
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp Kosher salt
approximately 8 oz. dried fruit (apricots, this time)
i also added toasted sesame seeds

then, mix the peanuts, oats, flax seed flour, and sunflower seeds in a baking dish with sides. toast them in the oven for 10-12 minutes, stirring every few minutes so that they don’t get burned.

in the mean time, prepare a glass baking dish (about 11 x 13 inches) for your granola by lining it with waxed paper lightly sprayed with a nonstick spray.

put the brown sugar, honey, butter, vanilla, and salt into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.

by now, your grains and nuts should be toasted, so mix everything together in a large bowl. the grains, the liquid “glue,” and the dried fruit. turn off your oven, because you’re finished with it now.

mix everything REALLY WELL because you want to make sure the “glue” gets all over everything. dump your granola mixture into your prepared baking dish.

the following part is really important: spread out the mixture with a wooden spoon or spatula.
fold over the sides of the waxed paper or add a sheet on top, and PRESS REALLY HARD ALL OVER the granola. you want to compact it together so that your bars won’t fall apart when you cut them.

wait 2-3 hours or until the granola has totally cooled.

then, open the waxed paper …

i cut and packaged mine up in plastic baggies and you can store them in the fridge or in the cupboard. they should stay good for up to 3 weeks.

i walked for Rebecca Turley, this weekend. this marked the start of a month long on-going competition for Designer of the Year for Scottsdale Fashion Week. the designer that i walked for two years ago won. i am hoping that my positive vibes will bring the same luck this year to becky! i really love the start of her collection. her line is very vintage inspired and she chooses beautiful colors.. love love love!!
